Teaching Institution for artists as well as gallery and rotating exhibition space housed in what was previously a string factory during the Mexican revolution. Great place to visit located in the very charming town of San Agustin Etla, a 40 minute taxi ride from the city center. Campestre San Agustin is a good, casual spot for lunch
This botanical garden is one of the MOST beautiful in the world and THE most important botanical garden in Mexico. They pride their work in saving many endangered species and highlight those of the country. Can only be visited guided tour, 2 offered in English daily. Don’t miss the portrait gallery at the entrance!!

Susana Trilling is a chef and friend who has lived in Oaxaca for 30 years and is an authority on Oaxacan cuisine. She gives a weekly class on Wednesdays at her school in Etla that includes transportation from the centro in Oaxaca city, market visit and breakfast, cooking class and meal.
This is the large market in downtown Oaxaca. The big market day is Saturday and truly bustling with vendors descending from outlying villages. There are many things to buy and eat. Use caution with your wallet and do not venture alone.

One of the most important archaeological sites in Mexico, Monte Alban is the site of ruins of an ancient centre of Zapotec and Mixtec culture. The initial construction at the site has been placed at circa 8 th century BCE and contains great plazas, truncated pyramids, underground passageways, and approximately 170 tombs, the most elaborate yet uncovered in the Americas.
One of Mexico’s best known ruins, Mitla is 38km southeast of Oaxaca city passing Teotitlan. It is believed that Mitla (Nahuatl: Place of the Dead) was established as a sacred burial site long before the Christian era, probably by the Zapotecs, whose influence was predominant until about AD 900. Between 900 and 1500 the Mixtecs moved down from northern Oaxaca and took possession of Mitla; it is the Mixtec influence that is most pronounced on the existing ruins.
A famous weaving village, located about 25km southeast of Oaxaca, Teotitlan has been renowned for it’s weaving wares since pre-Hispanic times. Quality today is high, and traditional dyes made from natural sources like indigo, cochineal and moss have been revived. Great place to purchase rugs and blankets
